SLES 10 install on VMWare ESX = no disks!

Use LSI Logic for the SCSI controller in the virtual machine settings

Today I had to install SLES 10 SP3 onto a VMware instance, and during initial installation process a message akin to ""no disks found"" popped up! Changing the disc controller type to LSI Logic SAS worked and discs appeared.

Oddly after a supposedly successful installation the server rebooted with the message similar to this, ""cannot mount / on /dev"". This is odd as all partitions bar /boot were inside LVM Volume Groups, and all modules were loaded. I did not find out why, because this machine had to be ready within an hour.

Workaround : Re-installed with all mount points inside LVM except root and boot. Root is on /dev/sda2 and the server should fall back there in case it could not mount it elsewhere.

Why did this happen? I have not ideal because we use the same set-up on a bare metal box and this worked. This blog entry is to remind me to put a ticket in with Novell.
